Details of roofing installation

Cant Strip

loop on the underside and Hook on the top side. Cant strip lifts up the first course so all subsequent courses lay correctly. After cant strip, drip edge is installed, the rain diverter, then starter slate protruding over the drip edge by an inch or more, then first course of field slate.

Starter and Rain Diverter

Starter slate is installed chamfered side facing roof, over rain diverter.  Rain diverter fastens to hook at top of previously installed course.

Field Applied Tape

There are always special situations on a roof where cutting slate and application of tape may be needed: short slate at a ridge, valley slate, slate around vent stacks, etc.  Millennium sells tape that can be applied in the field.  Video shows heating slate to dry it out and heat it up for better adhesion.

Scaffolding

The more scaffolding around the building the better (and safer).  Stairs on the scaffolding are for easy access to the roof, where otherwise slate could be broken in first courses getting on and off roof.
