We will utilize our many miles of hook and loop fasteners and our large supply of adhesives. These will be put down with a 6 axis robot, a computer controlled conveyor, and expensive glue application machinery which were doing construction materials prior to our shut down. We have been able to secure enough additional materials to produce several thousand of these face shields. We have asked existing suppliers to consider contributions of material to expand production and bring down costs.
Many commercial face shields secure the shield with an elastic tape. As one ER doc said, "The last thing you want to have is a shield that slips and obscures your vision. You need to reach up and adjust it with your dirty glove." An elastic strap is either so tight it gives you a headache, or too loose and it slips; adjustments are difficult. Millennium utilizes a strap of loop around the brow fastened with a short piece of hook tape. Optionally a second loop tape may be run from the center of the forehead to the brow tapes where they fasten at the back of the head. This option may be of interest to those wearing other items like lights, or other head gear where a brow strap alone is not sufficient.. Since our Centennial System(TM) roofing has passed a wind tunnel test at 160mph we are confident this shield won't slip. For the easy installation and non slip fit see our video tab or https://youtu.be/agiGQ64JSkc
Also many shields use lightweight 7 mil plastic. The inventory of PETG Millennium has secured is 40 mil, and the material, if not yet the shield, is FDA approved. We've also secured some 10 mil clear polyester film which we also intend to use in lower volume production, in addition to our production of heavier PETG based shields. ANSI Z87.1 Section 126.96.36.199 calls for a minimum thickness of 39.2 mils. We think thicker is better, even if some of ours will have to be lighter weight due to scarcity of materials.
We've made a few prototypes by hand on 3/27/20 and 3/28/20, validated production on 4/4/20, and are in production as of 4/6/20. We intend to ship a number of free shields to as many New England and New York hospitals as we can, as soon as we can. Our initial focus is on that region since its where we live and is closest to the hot spot of NYC. We welcome orders and commitments. Alas, this will be a first come first served market until we can secure additional clear plastic and foam.
We will initially price the heavier PETG shields as follows:
10 -19 units $6 each
20 - 99 units $5.00 each
100 -499 units $4.75
>500 units $4.5 each
Millennium is not getting rich at these pricing levels and may not even be covering its direct costs and defraying cap ex that has gotten us here. But we will be putting as many of our 28 laid off souls back to work as we can.
On April 9, as amended April 13, 2020, the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Face Shields: https://www.fda.gov/media/136842/download We believe our shields are compliant with this regulation and our product insert on this can be seen at www.mslate.rocks/instructions Our cleaning instructions are here: www.mslate.rocks/cleaning
We are delighted to be partnered with JKAdams right over the border in Dorset, Vermont. See: www.jkadams.com They have spun up their CNC mills and a laser cutter and will help us on boxing and fulfillment.
We'd also like to thank Halco USA. In support of our efforts they have contributed enough hook and loop material to make several thousand Millennium shields.
We'd also like to thank NY based vendors. They are loyal Millennium vendors in better times, and have worked at a fever pitch in this pandemic:
And various individual donors and early full price purchasers of shields who plan to give them away to front line health care workers and service providers in their communities.
These various partnerships and contributions allow us to bring you more shields faster and cheaper.
We need the names and contact info for docs, first responders and hospitals to tell our story.
We will be trying to raise money to support a "buy one, get two free" type of sale.
We need 1" thick foam and 40 mil clear plastic, preferable PETG if you have materials.
